Interpreter Types

There are many types of ASL interpreters, including:

ASL interpreter

Typically a hearing person who has completed extensive training to provide services for the deaf community 

​​

Certified Deaf Interpreter (CDI)

A deaf or hard of hearing person who is certified and endorsed to interpret in the field 

​

Trilingual interpreter

An interpreter who is fluent in English, Spanish, and ASL 

​​

Community interpreter

An interpreter who has knowledge of the deaf community and works with a hearing interpreter as a team 

​

Medical interpreter

An ASL interpreter who has knowledge of the medical industry and additional certifications 

 

Video relay interpreter

An ASL interpreter who works in an office managing video phones and mediating calls between hearing and deaf people

Realtime captioner

A trained professional who provides real-time captioning from spoken English to text
